What's the Deal With Lithium? Learn More About Lithium Ion Batter Types

Do you know how many different types of batteries are available on the market today? There are 19 different types of batteries based on detailed battery classification.

A battery contains one or more cells that are submitted to chemical reactions. These reactions cause electrons to move inside a circuit. Batteries store electrical energy allowing machines to work untethered from an electric source.

Continue reading to learn about the different lithium ion battery types.

What Is a Lithium-Ion Battery?

Lithium ions are the primary electrochemistry component of a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. When this battery discharges, lithium atoms in the anode become ionized. This separates them from their electrons.

These freed lithium ions leave the anode and travel across the liquid (electrolyte) inside the cell to the cathode. In the cathode, the lithium ions recombine with their electrons. At this point they become electrically neutral.

Lithium ions are very small in size. Their size allows them to move through a micro-permeable membrane dividing the anode and the cathode.

Li-ion batteries exhibit very high voltage and charge storage per unit mass and unit volume. These batteries have the capability to use different materials as electrodes. This increases their functional diversity.

Different Lithium Ion Battery Types

There are six different types of Li-ion batteries.

Lithium Cobalt Oxide

This is the most common type of Li-ion battery used for laptops and mobile phones. While it has higher specific energy, its specific power, safety, and lifespan are lower than other batteries. This Li-ion battery is the least expensive and has moderate performance.

Lithium Manganese Oxide

This type of Li-ion battery exhibits moderate specific power, energy, and safety compared to other batteries. While it is inexpensive, it has a low performance and lifespan. It’s most often used in medical equipment and power tools.

Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide

There are two major advantages to this type of battery. It has a high specific energy making it useful in electric powertrains, vehicles, and bikes. This battery also has a low cost.

It’s rated as moderate for specific power, safety, lifespan, and performance compared to other batteries. This type can be altered to have a high specific power or a high specific energy.

Lithium Iron Phosphate

This battery rates moderate to high on all characteristics. The one exception is that it has a low specific energy. It’s used in electric motorcycles and other products needing a long lifespan and high level of safety.

Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide

The only real advantage of this type of Li-ion battery is a high specific energy. The rest of the characteristics are moderate to low in comparison. It’s most often used for electric powertrains.

Lithium Titanate

This battery rates high for safety, performance, and lifespan. It has lower specific energy than the other batteries. Yet it has moderate specific power.

This battery is the most expensive type. Since it recharges very quickly, it’s useful for storing solar energy for smart grids.

Do You Use Lithium-Ion Batteries?

Most individuals use a variety of batteries in their daily life. This article described several different lithium ion battery types. This information allows you to determine if a battery meets the requirements needed for different machines.
