If you want to get precise with your battery tests, you can get a voltmeter.
This small device will test the voltage left in your battery. You will attach the red piece of the voltmeter to the raised top of your battery. And, you will attach the black piece to the bottom of the battery.
If your voltmeter reads above 1.3V then you still have useable charge left!

An alkaline battery has an average shelf life of 10 years.
